A Community Discussion on

GUN VIOLENCE IN AMERICA

The film, THE ARMOR OF LIGHT, follows the journey of an Evangelical minister trying to find the courage to preach about the growing toll of gun violence in America. The film tracks Reverend Rob Schenck who breaks with orthodoxy by questioning whether being pro-gun is consistent with being pro-life. Along the way, Rev. Schenck meets an unlikely partner from Florida with a very personal “Stand Your Ground” experience.

Call to Action from Florida Climate Table: Monday, Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m. Miami Commission Building

Call to Action from Florida Climate Table

Shared by Jan Booher, a fellow UU and co-founder of the Climate Action Coalition of South Florida (CAC)

What:              City of Miami Commission Meeting – Agenda item: Sea Level Rise

Time:              Monday, November 9, 2015 5:30 p.m.

Location:        Miami City Hall – Commission Chambers

Address:        3500 Pan American Drive, Miami (Coconut Grove)

Some context:  The city commission is discussing Sea Level Rise. Miami-Dade County’s new Chief Resilience Officer, Jim Murley, will be in attendance.  We want to show him that Sea Level Rise is very important to residents in all of Miami’s neighborhoods — and that we want a seat at the table as the decisions are made regarding our economic future, our neighborhoods, our health, and our homes.    We also want Mayor and the city commission to hear loud and clear our call for urgency and transparency from all levels government…regarding efforts to address climate change and sea level rise.

Talking point guidelines:

  • Thank the Commission for addressing the consequences (present and future) of Sea Level Rise.
  • Seat at the table: Governments need to cooperate but all the major stakeholders that make up our city….including our residents, our community- based organizations, businesses, etc want to be involved.
  • A Call for Transparency as actions are considered.
  • Urgency: We want to urge that work starts as quickly as possible.  The studies have been done.  Let’s get to work on the county’s *capital plan* right away.  The time for action is now.

UU principles are guiding actions in our Florida UU congregations! See 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 Justice Reports.

2013-2014 Justice Reports from Florida Unitarian Universalist Florida congregations are amazing. Read your congregation’s page. Is there anything missing? Is there anything that needs clarification? Then read all the Congregation pages. Are there congregations that are working on similar projects? Are you sharing information with them? Should you be working together?

And, what is planned at your congregation or community that you want to share on THIS front page? Until  each congregation has an authorized editor with posting authorization, please submit your announcement  to Martha Hartgering.
